Our Clocks
In the 18th century large clocks were made for Inns and Taverns. Most of these were weight driven and had a long pendulum like a Longcase clock, but hung on the wall. Their most notable feature was the hugh dial, two or three feet across, made of wood and without glass.
A tax was imposed on clocks and watches from 1797 to 1798 and so many people gave up using them and began relying on the Tavern clock, such that tavern clocks acquired a new name: “Act of parliament clock”. In the short time of the tax it almost destroyed the manufacturing industry.
