Mantel Clocks - Stock No: 008

Our Clocks

French mantel clock from the French empire period circa 1805. It stands 15" (40cm) high, 12" (30cm) wide, 4" (10cm) deep. It strikes the number on the hour and once on the half. This clock represents the American Goddess of Democracy “Colombia”. She is offering succour to the Eagle of the New Republic from the cup of plenty. She is occupied by a pillar of Zeus, and oil incense burner and a ewer.

On the lower bas relief it depicts the Birds of Fidelity drinking from a tazer supported a garland of flowers held by two seraphim. By the quality of the castings, gilding and clock, this was almost certainly a gift from the new Republic of France to the new republic of The United States of America.
